Hot Off The Screen. Breaking Posts.
Hot off the press is a printing term. Newspapers come hot off the printing press. It’s to do with friction (pumping out as much fiction as possible in the shortest possible time under the post-industrial-revolution pressure of the IT age). That’s the bad oil. But there’s a worse oil. There is no good oil in the media. Hot off the Screen or Breaking Posts are computer terms. Split open a breaking post and feel the heat generated by scattered splinters of old news rapidly rearranged into pixellated sawdust specks on your screens. Feel the energy and hot mushy heat of connectedness with your fellow cyber beings. Read and Write all about it! Extra! Extra crap! As if we don’t have enough already. Breaking posts and posts that stand the test of time? Opposites.

It's going to be interesting when net journalism finally beomes the rage and print journalism is relegated to second-tier. It might seem ages away at the moment, but so did air travel in the early 1900s.

I have several clients who used to work at local papers who have downsized considerably. Many of them have been relegated to the "online newspaper". I think that you are so right about second tier journalism.
